Communication skills in Engineering and Technology colleges
The recent high demand in the Engineering education in India has led to severe issues and concerns for the Technical and Professional colleges. The Engineering and Technology graduates (as per the feedback of Multinational companies) are lacking technical skills, English competency, communication and presentation skills, Soft skills, ethical competencies and the ability to work as part of a team. Therefore, the English teachers of engineering colleges have a very crucial role to play. Besides teaching English as a subject for comprehension and expression, they have to act as facilitators in shaping the communication skills and personality traits of the Engineering students to make them suitable employees for EMPLOYERS as well as a brand image for respective ALMA MATERS.Learners have been observing that in Gujarat Region and other parts of India English Language and Communication Skills teachers appointed in Engineering and Technology colleges are Master’s or M.Phil Degree holders in English Language and Literature with more of literature component than language and language teaching components. Furthermore, there are rarely any training programmes or workshops designed and conducted to promote the competency levels of such teachers.Engineering and Technology is a techno-savvy façade of the post modern era. English Language and Communication skills course is to improve students' ability in communicating technical and professional information. The English language and Communication skills for scientific, technological, and technical purposes is now becoming as one of the quintessential branches of Teaching English. Even it has been considered as a greater significance in the global context. Researchers argue that the teachers of English Language and Communication skills in Engineering and Technology (E&T) face several difficulties in teaching the curriculum. This research work will include a comprehensive outline for the teachers of English Language and Communication skills in Engineering and Technology Colleges, especially in the Indian context. The framework will serve as a basis for training the teachers in order that they can teach the specialized subject with ease and competence. This research work will be specifically for the teachers of English Language and Communication skills and Students in Engineering and Technology colleges in the State of Gujarat and India. To highlight and to suggest the competencies required from the teachers of English Language and Communication skills in Engineering/Professional Colleges in Gujarat and India and appropriate measures to develop and implement In-service/Pre-service training programmes to the English Language and Communication skills teachers based on the competencies identified.Since we are from a Humanities area and are seeking to identify competencies required of English teachers of Engineering institutions, our approach should rely more on observation, enquiry, generalization, validation, repetition, and objective analysis.
